As a counselor for an online theft class I am often asked what someone might get out of taking a theft or shoplifting class. People generally think the only thing you learn in a heft class is to be beaten over the head that you should not steal. That is not the case.
Can you guess the reason why 99% of the students take my class? If you guessed to better educate themselves about the dangers of shoplifting you would be incorrect. Of course most people take stop theft classes because it has been court-ordered.
The courts mandate theft classes so that people who have had at least one theft-related incident can better learn from past mistakes and keep from stealing again in the future.
In a typical 8-hour course you will take an introspective look at your motivations. Why have you been stealing? The course will help you determine what triggers your impulse to steal.
The goal of the impulse control petty theft class is not only to make the student self-aware of why he steals, but gives practical lessons on how to deal with these emotional triggers so they do not recur.

Have you ever been arrested where drugs were involved? If so, the judge probably ordered you to take a drug education class. As a recovering alcohol and drug addict, I too have taken many such classes.
As a counselor for both in class and online drug classes I may have had you in one of my classes. If courts throughout the country are mandating you take a drug education class, the big question remains – why. What are your thoughts.
The Penal System
Think about our penal system for a moment. What is its primary purpose? If you guessed to punish – you would be wrong! No the primary purpose of our penal system is to rehabilitate!
Rehabilitation is the primary reason courts throughout the United States send drug offenders to a drug education class. There are some who poo poo the idea that an educational class will help. But believe me – they do.
The human brain is a fascinating thing. It is powerful enough to convince us of anything. It can convince us we don’t have addiction issues and it can convince us that there is justification for our drug use and even DUI behavior.
More importantly, our brains can convince us that we have a problem and getting sober is the right step. That can happen in your first drug education class, or in your sixth, or 10th. Eventually, the brain will lead you to the right choice. That is why courts make drug offenders take alcohol drug class.
