Matchmakers used to come in the form of other people, not dating portals or social networking sites on the internet. Well intentioned friends, family, or work colleagues would often arrange for 2 singles to meet at a dance or restaurant in the hope that their matchmaking would result in the 2 individuals finding true love at first sight and perhaps even a wedding to follow in the not too distant future. Nowadays, boys meet girls meet boys in a totally different way. Most do their own matchmaking and a large percentage of singles use one of the many matchmaker online websites or social networks to find their perfect partner.
Once considered the dating tool for geeks, the meeting places are now the places to hang out and find a friend, lover, or partner for life. So does it work? It’s still early days, but the next 5 to 10 years should give us some statistics on whether or not relationships formed over the internet have a better chance of survival than those that were formed in the real world, often within one’s own neighbourhoods.
